And the fun never stops!
Last night we had the first ever Hunter College Pre-Health Post-Bacc Suture Workshop. Set up by pre-med students and taught by med students (who are, incidentally, great at teaching), we got the chance to re-learn how to tie knots (who knew that we were doing it wrong all these years?), slice up some perfectly good pigs’ feet, and stitch ‘em back together using the infamous “instrument tie”. We learned both simple/interrupted and running subcutaneous sutures.
But I don’t want to be the only one having fun. You can feel like you were there! We’ve got:
– Pictures
– video of me doing the simple/interrupted suture
– video of Suman doing the same
– video of Forest doing the same
– video of Erica … this is one of the better videos in terms of seeing the suturing
– two vids of Audrey, one teaching us proper knotting, and the other demoing the basic interrupted suture
In other moos, I dusted off the viffer today and took her out for a spin. Ah, Spring! How we missed thee!
Not for the faint of heart, etc etc, especially if you keep kosher.
Pics from last night’s Bio 102 lab are up. Come see the Fetal Pig, Exposed! Not for the faint of heart, of course, as we’re talking about a dissected pig. This week we were looking at the urogenital systems and the circulatory system.
Also … drumroll please … we have another video of the pig being ventilated! This one was done with my camera so the quality’s much better than the one from before. Enjoy!
So what do you do after a Chem exam? Well, first you put on your EMT uniform and tell some folks about your experiences (we had an “Experience Night” last night for post-baccs, so they could find out about volunteer ops). Then, you go to the West Village and watch your friend Jess Furman rock out at The Bitter End. It’s the 2nd time I’ve seen her play out, and this venue was so much better than Sidewalk Cafe. Less intimate but still close enough to see how she’s practically dwarfed by her big red guitar, scores of people cheering for her … my bartender’s all grown up and is gonna be a rock star.
Congrats, Jess!
Check out her music and let me know if you like. Jamal and Jean from MLTS came out to cheer her on as well … thanks for comin’ out, guys!
Well, it took a week, but I finally figured out how to get the proprietary encoded video off my phone and onto YouTube. I videotaped the playback using my camera. Cop-out! But it works. So, if you’re interested in seeing a dissected fetal pig being ventilated by hand, and watching those amazing lungs swell and fill with air, please click that link.
If you’re squeamish or don’t go for slimy, I would avoid the clicking.
I hope to have more pics and video from tonight’s lab … we do the circulatory and repro systems tonight. Woo!
BTW, for those scoring at home, I rocked an A in the last Bio midterm, a 100 in the first Chem midterm a while back, and the 2nd Chem midterm I took last night went pretty well, to boot.
Okay, I’m a fanb0i of BSG as much as the next guy. But tonight they totally jumped the shark. If you watched the episode you know what I’m talking about. What, did they get a new director and hire the writers from Lost?
*chirp* *chirp* Things have been quiet ’round here.
Sorry about that, I’ve been out living large. In fact, I finally got around to posting some pics from the past few weeks:
– Track Days at VIR with Hooligang
– Pool Night, More Luck Than Skill, at the Ace Bar
– Biology Lab Dissections (mature content)
– Videos: Jimmy on Patriot (1 and 2), Abe and me yukkin’ it up on the ice (squid alert!), me on the front straight at VIR North.
Enjoy! More coming soon.
Hoo, is my sleep cycle screwed. After work yesterday, I did the PSVAC version of a Tour 1 again, with Crystal. Crystal rocks. She’s also good luck, and we get to see some good sh1te on these overnight tours. I’m not allowed to go into detail of course, HIPAA and patient privacy and all, but beyond the medical excitement, we see some excellent NYPD and FDNY activity.
Take last night for instance. PSVAC has a special duty to look out for the ESU, in which we look out for them when they’re mobilized to deal with or look for a perp. It’s easy to fall and wrench a knee, or should someone get shot or stabbed, having EMS on scene to deal with a problem right away is critical. So we wath over our boys in blue. And last night there was a level 1 mobilization in search of a GTA suspect. Nothing came of it, but they brought out the chopper, and more units than you could shake a stick at. Even the K-9s came out to sniff around. It was a blast!
Never break the law in this town. They’ll get ya.
Other than that excitement, we technically had two saves last night. Crystal had the genuine article, working with Moe before I started our overnight shift. And I was finally able to use the BVM and do chest compressions in the field last night for the “technical” part of the two saves. It was good to know that I could use what I learned a year ago in the field and in a stressful situation.
Our last call of the night was special, too … let’s just say that it’s easy to confuse AOB and the smell of ketoacidosis, and we made the right call in the field. Woo!
